Newark to Cromwell Lock
5.25 miles, 1 lock
After a really great evening we had a fairly slow start today. It was supposed to rain all morning, but is didn’t! It had poured most of the night instead. Chris and I just took Monty along past the lock and over the causeway
And back along towards Newark Marina (all cruisers - no narrowboats), however we did not get that far – the rain had done its worst last night and the mud and water won the day.
The day we
left Tardebigge the fire brigade were there to see us off. There were two
engines in front of County Hall in Nottingham and then today, here they were
again. It is enough to make us think
they are following us.
We had an
early lunch and then we were off
Chris and I
nipped into Kings Marina for diesel – they were incredibly quick and we were
out again almost before we went in. They
seem to have a resident heron who flies from one button to the next.
Cleddau
waited for us at the one lock of the day - they had just settled down to read the Sunday paper, assuming we would be ages, when they had to set too and get going again.
The weather
was perfect – warm and sunny with a gentle breeze, so it was a wonderful
journey down to Cromwell lock – our final destination for the day to be in
position to catch the tide when we join the tidal Trent in the morning.
The pontoons
were full
so we both
moored up on the water point whilst we decided what to do.
Once again we were lucky enough to be the recipients of other boaters kindness – Bill Bara was on the outside of the pontoon and they very kindly moved to the inside, so we could breast up on the outside. The facilities here are fabulous – picnic tables and BBQ sites and even the weather was perfect for a barbecue, but sadly we had both made other arrangements for dinner.
